An onshore gas field hereafter called the R field—real name not revealed is in the southeast coast of Tanzania which includes a Tertiary aged shaly sand formation sand—shale sequences. The formation was penetrated by an exploration well R — X wherein no core was acquired, and there is no layer-wise published data of the petrophysical properties of the R field in the existing literature, which are essential to reserves estimation and production forecast.

Well logging

Well logging , also known as borehole logging is the practice of making a detailed record a well log of the geologic formations penetrated by a borehole. The log may be based either on visual inspection of samples brought to the surface geological logs or on physical measurements made by instruments lowered into the hole geophysical logs. Some types of geophysical well logs can be done during any phase of a well's history: drilling, completing, producing, or abandoning. Well logging is performed in boreholes drilled for the oil and gas , groundwater , mineral and geothermal exploration, as well as part of environmental and geotechnical studies. The oil and gas industry uses wireline logging to obtain a continuous record of a formation's rock properties. Wireline logging can be defined as being "The acquisition and analysis of geophysical data performed as a function of well bore depth, together with the provision of related services. The measurements are made referenced to "TAH" - True Along Hole depth: these and the associated analysis can then be used to infer further properties, such as hydrocarbon saturation and formation pressure , and to make further drilling and production decisions.

Lindseth, R. Digital computers are useful for the standard methods of well log computation, and provide a powerful tool for the development of new methods of well log analysis. Some of the techniques developed in other fields may be adapted to operations with logs. One of the most promising areas of study appears to lie in the application of Signal Theory techniques to log analysis. Signal Theory processes endeavor to extract and enhance qualitative and quantitative information contained in the signal itself, rather than treat the signal solely as a measuring device. For computer operations, a continuous signal is represented by a finite number of samples.

Lawrence, Tony D.. A relatively modern nuclear logging survey provides methods to evaluate the production potential of both old and new wells through casing, even in formations containing fresh water. Several interpretation techniques are developed that apply test pit data to field applications in determining possible production. Applications and limitations are discussed of the techniques that offer the user independent alternatives and complements to other log analysis methods. A need long has existed for a method to determine hydrocarbon saturations of zones behind casing. To make such determinations, an instrument was introduced in to measure the lifetime of pulsed neutrons.
