Critical theory

Critical management studies ; Critical organization studies ; Critical postmodernity. Critical theories of organizations refer to the cluster of literature that typically employs elements of the Frankfurt School of critical theory as well as the work of post structural theorists like Deleuze, Derrida, and Foucault among others to understand managerial processes.

If a common progenitor existed, one might argue it would be the work of Braverman who set the tone for critical inquiry in the context of labor.

He particularly focused on how labor processes become power games using the combination of a Marxist perspective and concepts like deskilling. Another critical point in early development comes with the work of Alvesson , who uses the phrase critical organization theory, and begins exploring ties to the Frankfurt School along with issues of dominance in management studies.

Critical Theory and Postmodernism Approaches to Organization Studies

Critical theory also capitalized as Critical Theory [1] is an approach to social philosophy that focuses on reflective assessment and critique of society and culture in order to reveal and challenge power structures. With origins in sociology and literary criticism , it argues that social problems are influenced and created more by societal structures and cultural assumptions than by individual and psychological factors. Maintaining that ideology is the principal obstacle to human liberation, [2] critical theory was established as a school of thought primarily by the Frankfurt School theoreticians Herbert Marcuse , Theodor Adorno , Walter Benjamin , Erich Fromm , and Max Horkheimer.

A decade on after it first published to international acclaim, the seminal Handbook of Organization Studies has been updated to capture exciting new developments in the field. Providing a retrospective and prospective overview of organization studies, this Handbook continues to challenge and inspire readers with its synthesis of knowledge and literature. As ever, contributions have been selected to reflect the diversity of the field. New chapters cover areas such as organizational change, knowledge management and organizational networks. Providing a short, understandable and useful overview of critical theory and postmodernism in organization studies is not easy.
