Apparently Einstein had only read the book due to repeated recommendation by their mutual friend Luitzen Egbertus Jan Brouwer. What struck me was this: with regard to the factual attitude to life and to the human community we have a great deal in common. Your personal ideal with its striving for freedom from ego-oriented desires, for making life beautiful and noble, with an emphasis on the purely human element.
The word God is the product of human weakness
Many religious theists cite Einstein as an example of a smart scientist who was also a religious theist like them. This supposedly rebuts the idea that science conflicts with religion or that science is atheistic. However, Albert Einstein consistently and unambiguously denied believing in personal gods who answered prayers or involved themselves in human affairs exactly the sort of god common to religious theists claiming that Einstein was one of them. The word god is for me nothing more than the expression and product of human weaknesses, the Bible a collection of honourable, but still primitive legends which are nevertheless pretty childish. No interpretation no matter how subtle can for me change this. Letter to philosopher Eric Gutkind, January 3, 2.
The philosophy of religion and the quest for spiritual truth preoccupied Albert Einstein--so much that it has been said "one might suspect he was a disguised theologian. Only fragmentarily known, Einstein's ideas about religion have been often distorted both by atheists and by religious groups eager to claim him as one of their own. But what exactly was Einstein's religious credo? In this fascinating book, the distinguished physicist and philosopher Max Jammer offers an unbiased and well-documented answer to this question. The book begins with a discussion of Einstein's childhood religious education and the religious atmosphere--or its absence--among his family and friends. It then reconstructs, step by step, the intellectual development that led Einstein to the conceptions of a cosmic religion and an impersonal God, akin to "the God of Spinoza. He also analyzes the precise meaning of Einstein's famous dictum "Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind," and why this statement can serve as an epitome of Einstein's philosophy of religion.
Einstein and Religion: Physics and Theology
Albert Einstein's religious views have been widely studied and often misunderstood. Einstein used many labels to describe his religious views, including " agnostic ", "religious nonbeliever" and a "pantheistic" believer in " Spinoza's God ". Einstein was raised by secular Jewish parents, and attended a local Catholic public elementary school in Munich. I came—though the child of entirely irreligious Jewish parents—to a deep religiousness, which, however, reached an abrupt end at the age of twelve. Through the reading of popular scientific books I soon reached the conviction that much in the stories of the Bible could not be true.
Baruch Spinoza Montgomery Fellows are outstanding people Dartmouth invites to campus to stay for a year to enrich the academic and educational life of the college. Baruch Spinoza was a Portuguese-Jewish philosopher who had been excommunicated from his Jewish community at the age of 24 because of his heretical thoughts. His major work, Ethics , was published posthumously. Of his two great contemporaries, Leibnitz and Descartes , Spinoza was perhaps the most extreme Rationalist, making every claim possible to support the sole use of reason. Spinoza, in his work Ethics , makes use of metaphysics and other pseudo-scientific ideas. Given that his methodology would be unacceptable today, who would take Spinoza seriously?
Many people attempt to make it mean Einstein did not believe in God and was an Atheist. This is an incorrect assumption. He had become the creator of faith. In fact, Einstein wrote , "The scientist is possessed by the sense of universal causation. His religious feeling takes the form of a rapturous amazement at the harmony of natural law, which reveals an intelligence of such superiority that, compared with it, all the systematic thinking and acting of human beings is an utterly insignificant reflection. And the Jewish people to whom I gladly belong
