Play-literacy 1 Research on Play and Literacy: a Critical Review

Literacy is the foundation for doing well at school, socialising with others, problem-solving, making decisions, becoming independent, managing money and working. Talking, singing, playing sound and word games, reading, writing and drawing with your child are great ways to lay a good literacy foundation. The great news is that everyday activities , like family meals, bath time or shopping, are all fun opportunities for literacy development. The key is to use different times and opportunities to help your child learn. It can be as simple as writing a shopping list together, playing a rhyming game or reading a story before bed.

Supporting Literacy-Related Play: Roles for Teachers of Young Children

There is a growing body of evidence supporting the many connections between cognitive competence and high-quality pretend play. This article defines the cluster of concepts related to pretend play and cognition and briefly synthesizes the latest research on the role of such play in children's cognitive, social, and academic development. The article notes that there is a growing body of evidence to suggest that high-quality pretend play is an important facilitator of perspective taking and later abstract thought, that it may facilitate higher-level cognition, and that there are clear links between pretend play and social and linguistic competence. The article also notes that there is still a great need for research on the relationship between high-quality pretend play and development of specific academic skills. The article concludes with a discussion of the challenges and potential policy directions suggested by research findings.

Play in the preschool years has the potential to provide young children with a highly engaging and meaningful context for learning essential early literacy concepts and skills. The potential exists because theoretically, dramatic play and literacy share higher order, cognitive processes such as imaging, categorizing and problem solving. Observations derived from a Piagetian view emphasize the value of social pretend play for practicing and consolidating broad cognitive skills, such as symbolic representation, and emerging literacy skills, such as print awareness. This perspective also focuses on interactions between individuals and the objects in the physical environment, leading to the development of literacy-enriched play centers as an intervention strategy. Arguing that literacy acquisition is a social, constructive process that begins early in life, this theory posits that children develop literacy concepts and skills through everyday experiences with others, including bedtime storybook reading and pretend play. Research on the play-literacy connection in literacy development has generally focused on two basic relationships:. Play Process.

In an important sense, pedagogy is the overarching concept; it refers broadly to the deliberate process of cultivating development within a given culture and society. From this point of view, pedagogy has three basic components: 1 curriculum, or the content of what is being taught; 2 methodology, or the way in which teaching is done; and 3 techniques for socializing children in the repertoire of cognitive and affective skills required for successful functioning in society that education is designed to promote. Curriculum, or the content of teaching, may be designed to encourage learning processes memory, attention, observation and cognitive skills reasoning, comparing and contrasting, classification , as well as the acquisition of specific information, such as the names of the letters of the alphabet Wiggins and McTighe, The teaching strategies or methods used in implementing the curriculum are the arranged interactions of people and materials planned and used by teachers. Literacy in Early Childhood and Primary Education (3-8 years

As young children engage in their play and daily activities, they show a natural interest in the world around them. Early Childhood Experiences The foundation of early childhood education is built upon relationships that children develop in their homes, communities, and schools. In these settings, children meet new friends, learn to get along with others, share their opinions, engage in decision making, and contribute as a member of a group.
