The way that a diode operates can be difficult to understand as it involves fairly advanced quantum mechanics. However, at the simplest level the operation of a diode can be understood by looking at the flow of positive charges or " holes " and the negative charges the electrons. Technically, a semiconductor diode is referred to as a p-n junction. These p-n junctions are important in the operation of a photovoltaic cell as well. Having the diode work properly requires a process known as doping. Semiconductors can be doped with materials so that they have an excess of easily displaced electrons - generally referred to as a negative or n-type region.

One of the major difference between the forward and the reverse biasing is that in forward biasing the positive terminal of the battery is connected to the p-type semiconductor material and the negative terminal is connected to the n-type semiconductor material. Whereas in reverse bias the n-type material is connected to the positive terminal of the supply and the p-type material is connected to the negative terminal of the battery. The forward and reverse biasing is differentiated below in the comparison chart. Biasing means the electrical supply or potential difference is connected to the semiconductor device. The potential difference is of two types namely — forward bias and the reverse bias. The forward bias reduces the potential barrier of the diode and establishes the easy path for the flow of current. While in reverse bias the potential difference increases the strength of the barrier which prevents the charge carrier to move across the junction.

This understanding will lay a better foundation for exploring further into different aspects of semiconductor electronics. PN junction is a significant building block and it is one among the indispensable structures offered by the semiconductor technology in electronics. The exciting property of semiconductor diode is facilitating the electrons to flow exclusively in one direction across it; as a result it acts as a rectifier of Alternating Current. The indispensable operation in semiconductor diode is the basis for understanding of all the semiconductor diodes. The diode can be observed as a straightforward bipolar semiconductor device.

At thermal equilibrium there are no external inputs such as light or applied voltage. The currents balance each other out so there is no net current within the device. Under steady state there are external inputs such as light or applied voltage, but the conditions do not change with time. Devices typically operate in steady state and are either in forward or reverse bias. If the applied voltage changes rapidly, there will be a short delay before the solar cell responds. As solar cells are not used for high speed operation there are few extra transient effects that need to be taken into account.

Forward Voltage Drop (VF): Is the forward biasing junction level voltage (V for Germanium and V for Silicon Diode) · Average Forward.

Introduction to Diodes And Rectifiers

In chapter 1 — Understanding the PN junction , we have seen how a PN junction is formed from a p-type and n-type semiconductor. We have also learned about diffusion current, depletion region, drift current and barrier potential. Lets just make some questions. What is the use of a PN junction? Why have scientists created a pn junction device?

Since the day my mother surprised me with the first home computer for Christmas back in, well, let's just say a long time ago, I've been intrigued by the technology. Anyway, at the time, I was the envy of every fellow geek, nerd, and teacher at my school. There I was with an impressive 64, wait for it, kilobytes of raw processing power. Now, fast forward to the present day, and my laptop utilizes , times that amount in RAM alone.

Since a junction forms between a P type and N type material it is called as P-N junction.

What is Diode Bias or Biasing?
