The temperature-dependent composite microstress field is obtained by combining the shear-lag model and temperature-dependent material properties and damage models. The critical matrix strain energy criterion assumes that the strain energy in the matrix has a critical value. With increasing applied stress, when the matrix strain energy is higher than the critical value, more matrix cracks and interface debonding occur to dissipate the additional energy. Based on the composite damage state, the temperature-dependent matrix strain energy and its critical value are obtained.

Ceramic matrix composites CMCs are a subgroup of composite materials and a subgroup of ceramics. They consist of ceramic fibers embedded in a ceramic matrix. The fibers and the matrix both can consist of any ceramic material, whereby carbon and carbon fibers can also be regarded as a ceramic material. The motivation to develop CMCs was to overcome the problems associated with the conventional technical ceramics like alumina , silicon carbide , aluminum nitride , silicon nitride or zirconia — they fracture easily under mechanical or thermo-mechanical loads because of cracks initiated by small defects or scratches. The crack resistance is very low, as in glass. To increase the crack resistance or fracture toughness , particles so-called monocrystalline whiskers or platelets were embedded into the matrix.

Ceramic materials are suitable for use in the high temperature range. Oxide ceramics, in particular, have a high potential for long-term applications under thermal cycling and oxidising atmosphere. However, monolithic oxide ceramics are unsuitable for use in high-temperature technical applications because of their brittleness. Thin-walled, oxidation resistant, and high-temperature resistant materials can be developed by reinforcing oxide ceramics with ceramic fibres such as alumina fibres. The increase of the mechanical stability of the composites in comparison to the non-fibre reinforced material is of outstanding importance. Possible stresses or cracks can be derived along the fibre under mechanical stress or deformation.

Ceramics represent a very wide range of materials, which differ from each other by their chemical composition, structure and properties. These materials can be defined as predominantly crystalline materials, formed mainly by inorganic compounds of non-metallic character, which are bound particularly by ionic and ion-covalent bonds. Ceramics are most frequently divided by the purpose of its use into traditional and structural ceramics. Traditional ceramics are produced entirely from natural raw materials such as kaolin, clays, quartz, feldspar , which are formed and fired. These ceramic materials can also be designated as vitreous or porous due to the fact that they contain a considerable portion of vitreous phase, pores and crystals of various compositions.

The advent of engineering-designed polymer matrix composites in the late s has provided an impetus for the emergence of sophisticated ceramic matrix composites. The development of CMCs is a promising means of achieving lightweight, structural materials combining high temperature strength with improved fracture toughness, damage tolerance and thermal shock resistance. Considerable research effort is being expended in the optimisation of ceramic matrix composite systems, with particular emphasis being placed on the establishment of reliable and cost-effective fabrication procedures.
