Man does not produce the coal as nature as produced it.

Chapter 4- Meaning of Production and Factors of Production

Resources are also called factors of production. What makes something a resource? For one thing, it needs to be productive. The following video will give you an overview of what economists mean when they talk about resources or factors of production. There are four categories of resources, or factors of production:. Natural resources have two fundamental characteristics: 1 They are found in nature, and 2 they can be used for the production of goods and services. Examples of natural resources are land, trees, wind, water, and minerals.

Factors of production: Historical theories and new developments

In economics the term factors of production refers to all the resources required to produce goods and services. A paper company might need, among many other things, trees, water, a large factory full of heavy machinery, a warehouse, an office building, and delivery trucks. It might require a thousand workers to run the factory, take orders, market or sell the paper, and deliver it to wholesalers or retail stores. It might need thousands more resources of varying size and cost. Together, these resources constitute the factors of production necessary for the paper company to do business. Though the number and variety of the different resources businesses require is limitless, economists divide the factors of production into three basic categories: land, labor, and capital. Land refers to all of the natural resources that businesses need to make and distribute goods and services.

Some of the important factors of production are: i Land ii Labour iii Capital iv Entrepreneur. Whatever is used in producing a commodity is called its inputs. For example, for producing wheat, a farmer uses inputs like soil, tractor, tools, seeds, manure, water and his own services. All the inputs are classified into two groups—primary inputs and secondary inputs. Primary inputs render services only whereas secondary inputs get merged in the commodity for which they are used. It is primary inputs which are called factors of production. Primary inputs are also called factor inputs and secondary inputs are known as non-factor inputs.

The value, or satisfaction, that people derive from the goods and services they consume and the activities they pursue is called utility. The factors of production in an economy are its labor, capital, and natural resources. Labor is the human effort that can be applied to the production of goods and services. People who are employed or would like to be are considered part of the labor available to the economy. Capital is a factor of production that has been produced for use in the production of other goods and services.
