Models and modelling for authentic STEM education: reinforcing the argument

It focuses on the junior secondary years of education students aged , since this is the age range in which students choose whether or not to formally opt out of STEM education. It is here that the book makes a significant contribution to the field by integrating the STEM area and focusing on the junior years of schooling. While developing this book, the editors drew on two main premises: Firstly, STEM is seen as the integrated study of science, technology, engineering and mathematics in a coherent learning paradigm that is based on real-world applications. Secondly, it is important to integrate digital technologies into STEM education beyond the superficial use of ICTs seen in many schools. The book also addresses the challenges within STEM education — many of which are long-standing. To this end, it includes chapters o.

Metrics details. Mathematics is fundamental for many professions, especially science, technology, and engineering. Yet, mathematics is often perceived as difficult and many students leave disciplines in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics STEM as a result, closing doors to scientific, engineering, and technological careers. We propose an alternative approach to changes in mathematics education and show how the alternative also applies to STEM education. Mathematics is commonly perceived to be difficult e.

Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics STEM , previously science , mathematics , engineering , and technology SMET , [1] is a broad term used to group together these academic disciplines. It has implications for workforce development, national security concerns and immigration policy. The third major branch of science, social science such as: psychology , sociology , and political science , are categorized separately from the other two branches of science, and are instead grouped together with humanities and arts to form another counterpart acronym named HASS - Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences , rebranded in the UK in as SHAPE. The change was, in part, instigated at an interagency meeting by Peter Faletra the director from the Office of Science division of Workforce Development for Teachers and Scientists. Teaching and Learning STEM: A Practical Guide

Metrics details. This commentary expands the notion that models and modelling can be used as a basis to foster an integrated and authentic STEM education and STEM literacy. The aim is to synthesize key publications that document relationships between authenticity, models and modelling, and STEM education. The implications of the synthesis are as follows: authenticity must be viewed as a cornerstone of STEM literacy; models and modelling processes can bridge the gap between STEM disciplines through authentic practices; models and modelling should be used as a means to promote STEM literacy and the transfer of knowledge and skills between contexts, both in and out of the STEM disciplines; modelling activities can serve as a meaningful route toward authentic STEM education; teaching authentic modelling processes must be rooted in explicit and tested frameworks that are based on the practice of the STEM disciplines; and, authentic STEM education should be driven by developing interaction between STEM subjects in parallel with maintaining the integrity of each subject. If this vision is to be reinforced, it is of utmost importance that implementing any model-based authentic educational activities are underpinned by evidence-based frameworks and recommendations for teaching practice.

Educational research has repeatedly shown that compared to traditional teacher-centered instruction, certain learner-centered methods lead to improved learning outcomes, greater development of critical high-level skills, and increased retention in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics STEM disciplines. The book draws on the authors' extensive backgrounds and decades of experience in STEM education and faculty development. Its engaging and well-illustrated descriptions will equip you to implement the strategies in your courses and to deal effectively with problems including student resistance that might occur in the implementation. The book will help you:.
