Black Morocco: A History of Slavery, Race, and Islam chronicles the experiences, identity and achievements of enslaved black people in Morocco from the sixteenth century to the beginning of the twentieth century. Chouki El Hamel argues that we cannot rely solely on Islamic ideology as the key to explain social relations and particularly the history of black slavery in the Muslim world, for this viewpoint yields an inaccurate historical record of the people, institutions and social practices of slavery in Northwest Africa. El Hamel focuses on black Moroccans' collective experience beginning with their enslavement to serve as the loyal army of the Sultan Isma'il.

Haratin , also referred to as Haratine , Harratin or Hartani , are a group of people, known to be descendants of black enslaved people, that live especially in the Maghreb. The Haratin are related to but distinct from current Sub-Saharan Africans and speak Maghrebi Arabic dialects as well as various Berber languages. Morocco is a diverse country that has yet to come to terms with its own black population and the impact of centuries of the trans-Sahara slave trade. Diversity, the history of slavery in Morocco, and the racism that is generally inherent in post-slave societies are not openly discussed and often denied by non-Blacks. This paper examines the efforts of black Moroccans to tell the stories of racial discrimination against them as a first step in an attempt to raise awareness, pierce the taboos and end the denial surrounding anti-black racism in Morocco. Racism exists everywhere in the world but varies according to the context. Al-Abeed , Al-Khadem Servant, pl. Wena Kahlou ch? And me, am I a Blackie?

The debates have been dominated by security questions and the increasing fortification of passageways into the global North. However, so far little academic research has been carried out on the social and cultural representations of migration candidates in the destination countries of the Global South. Migration in its various concrete and imaginary manifestations has become a dominant theme in Moroccan cinema in the new century. Drawing on my extended research on Maghrebi cinema in the era of globalisation, this article aims to articulate the condition and unheard voice of sub-Saharan migrants in Moroccan cinema. A focus on film as a popular art allows for an in-depth investigation not only of the social and cultural representations of continental migration in Africa, but also crucially for a close examination of the lesser-known role of the sub-Saharan migrant in the cultural production of the self and the Other in Morocco today.
