Human security is an emerging paradigm for understanding global vulnerabilities whose proponents challenge the traditional notion of national security through military security by arguing that the proper referent for security should be at the human rather than national level. Human security provides one of the most important protections; a person-centred axis of freedom from fear, from want and to live with dignity. It is surprising given its centrality to the human experience, that its connection with human rights has not yet been explored in a truly systematic way. This important new book addresses that gap in the literature by analysing whether human security might provide the tools for an expansive and integrated interpretation of international human rights. The examination takes a two-part approach. Firstly, it evaluates convergences between human security and all human rights — civil, political, economic, social and cultural — and constructs an investigative framework focused on the human security-human rights synergy.
Don't have an account? The discourse of human security often neglects to situate the concept within the existing international legal order, a linkage which is essential to the realization of human security. Rather, international law is often presented as an obstacle to the realization of human security, or as a separate system, with different goals and motivations. In particular, the legal norm of State sovereignty is often considered a barrier to the full implementation of human security. In examining the development of international law, it becomes apparent that the goals of international law are not distinct from those of human security. The principles underlying human security have been latent in international law and are evolving with increasing dynamism to encompass many of the basic principles of human security.

These concepts are also defined and their distinctions, complementarities, and relationships examined. It traces the sites and events in which critical feminist analysis led to turning points in human rights advances for women and analyzes key issues in feminist discourses on human rights and human security. The chapter engages with questions such as: How do gender, race, class, spatial, and religious identities intersect in local and global spaces within which women challenge the denial of rights and security? How are the imperatives of gender equality and equity being addressed within national, regional, and global arenas? What knowledge and insights have transnational feminist movements acquired over the years that inform policy activism toward transforming existing development processes?
Humanitarian intervention is always controversial, especially if it involves the use of repressive measures, be it through military means or sanctions. In order to strengthen its credibility and consistency as a humanitarian actor, the EU should prioritize the protection of civilians, avoid double standards at all costs, and prioritize genuine multilateralism, which requires a real involvement of all parties. The human security notion has been defended with the argument that the broad spectrum of perils that people confront in this global era cannot be understood nor fully tackled by traditional public policies and concepts of national, military and state security. The recent conceptualization of human security on the basis of freedom from fear , freedom from want and freedom to live in dignity has operated both in a horizontal way with regard to the subject matter of security — the elements and conditions considered to pose threats — and in a vertical way with regard to who should be the object of security — the actors worthy of protection — persons instead of states.
