In fuzzy mathematics , fuzzy logic is a form of many-valued logic in which the true values of variables may be any real number between 0 and 1 both inclusive. It is employed to handle the concept of partial truth, where the true value may range between completely true and completely false. The term fuzzy logic was introduced with the proposal of fuzzy set theory by Lotfi Zadeh. Fuzzy logic is based on the observation that people make decisions based on imprecise and non-numerical information. Fuzzy models or sets are mathematical means of representing vagueness and imprecise information hence the term fuzzy. These models have the capability of recognising, representing, manipulating, interpreting, and utilising data and information that are vague and lack certainty. Fuzzy logic has been applied to many fields, from control theory to artificial intelligence.

Since its launching in , the journal Fuzzy Sets and Systems has been devoted to the international advancement of the theory and application of fuzzy sets and systems. The theory of fuzzy sets now encompasses a well organized corpus of basic notions including and not restricted to aggregation operations The theory of fuzzy sets now encompasses a well organized corpus of basic notions including and not restricted to aggregation operations, a generalized theory of relations, specific measures of information content, a calculus of fuzzy numbers. Fuzzy sets are also the cornerstone of a non-additive uncertainty theory, namely possibility theory, and of a versatile tool for both linguistic and numerical modeling: fuzzy rule-based systems.

Introduction to Fuzzy Sets and Logic

In mathematics , fuzzy sets a. Fuzzy sets were introduced independently by Lotfi A. In classical set theory , the membership of elements in a set is assessed in binary terms according to a bivalent condition — an element either belongs or does not belong to the set. Fuzzy sets generalize classical sets, since the indicator functions aka characteristic functions of classical sets are special cases of the membership functions of fuzzy sets, if the latter only take values 0 or 1. The fuzzy set theory can be used in a wide range of domains in which information is incomplete or imprecise, such as bioinformatics.

Harpreet Singh, Madan M. Solo, Lotfi A. Box , Beijing , China. This special issue is dedicated to Professor Lotfi A. Zadeh, the father of fuzzy logic. The theory of fuzzy logic is based on the notion of relative graded membership, as inspired by the processes of human perception and cognition. Lotfi A.
