Linda M. This essay will review three gerontology textbooks, all published by Springer, only one of which is entirely new Sugar et al. Although all three texts share certain common features mostly in terms of some of the topics covered, a practical bent toward finding the best path through aging, and their valuing multidisciplinary or interdisciplinary approaches , each is written with very different student audiences in mind. Each builds on a particular set of premises, utilizes research differently to support the narrative, and develops a definite style of writing and organization to bind the text together. In this essay I first will describe the major features and content of each text so I can identify its most appropriate audience.

Uniquely bridging a gap in the gerontology literature between the biological and psychosocial aspects of aging, this interdisciplinary text provides key updates on an abundance of cutting-edge research; expands information on diversity issues in aging; and examines in great depth the physiology of aging, theories of biological aging, and methodological issues. Written for upper-level undergraduate and graduate students, and invigorated by the addition of new coauthors, the third edition integrates findings in biology, psychology, and the social sciences to provide comprehensive, multidisciplinary coverage of the aging process. Included is key information on age-related changes and disease-related processes, the demography of the aging population worldwide, theories of aging, and ways to promote optimal aging. From a psychosocial perspective, the book examines mental health, stress and coping, spirituality, and caregiving in later years. Also included is crucial information on longitudinal design and statistics as they relate to research on aging, promising new trends in gerontechnology and Green Houses, and information on health promotion programs.

Ageing or aging see spelling differences is the process of becoming older. The term refers especially to humans , many other animals, and fungi, whereas for example bacteria, perennial plants and some simple animals are potentially biologically immortal. In humans, ageing represents the accumulation of changes in a human being over time [2] and can encompass physical , psychological , and social changes. Reaction time, for example, may slow with age, while knowledge of world events and wisdom may expand. Ageing is among the greatest known risk factors for most human diseases : of the roughly , people who die each day across the globe, about two-thirds die from age-related causes. The causes of ageing are uncertain; current theories are assigned to the damage concept, whereby the accumulation of damage such as DNA oxidation may cause biological systems to fail, or to the programmed ageing concept, whereby problems with the internal processes epigenomic maintenance such as DNA methylation [3] may cause ageing. Programmed ageing should not be confused with programmed cell death apoptosis.

Well-being is a positive outcome that is meaningful for people and for many sectors of society, because it tells us that people perceive that their lives are going well. Good living conditions e. Tracking these conditions is important for public policy. However, many indicators that measure living conditions fail to measure what people think and feel about their lives, such as the quality of their relationships, their positive emotions and resilience, the realization of their potential, or their overall satisfaction with life—i. Well-being is associated with numerous health-, job-, family-, and economically-related benefits.

Compelling evidence suggests that both biological and psychosocial factors impact the process of aging. However, our understanding of the dynamic interplay among biological and psychosocial factors across the life course is still fragmentary. For example, it needs to be established how the interaction of individual factors e. This paper aims to outline potential intersection points serving as an interface between biological and psychosocial factors, with an emphasis on the mitochondrion. Mitochondria are cellular organelles which play a critical role in cellular senescence.

Although coping has been shown to influence physical health in younger populations, whether coping affects health in older adults appears to depend upon how coping and health are conceptualized. This article reviews recent literature on coping and health in older adults in three areas. Second, we describe ways in which coping may differ between older and younger populations. The recent literature suggests that coping may be a developmental and multifaceted process.
