Political Thinking, Political Theory, and Civil Society

Political science , the systematic study of governance by the application of empirical and generally scientific methods of analysis. As traditionally defined and studied, political science examines the state and its organs and institutions. The contemporary discipline , however, is considerably broader than this, encompassing studies of all the societal, cultural, and psychological factors that mutually influence the operation of government and the body politic. Although political science borrows heavily from the other social sciences , it is distinguished from them by its focus on power —defined as the ability of one political actor to get another actor to do what it wants—at the international, national, and local levels. Although political science overlaps considerably with political philosophy , the two fields are distinct. Political philosophy is concerned primarily with political ideas and values, such as rights, justice , freedom, and political obligation whether people should or should not obey political authority ; it is normative in its approach i.

Liberalism, conservatism, populism, environmentalism, multiculturalism, agrarianism, labour pragmatism, socialism, and myriad other isms. Ideology is a ubiquitous, continuously innovating dimension of human experience, but its character and impact are notoriously difficult to pinpoint within political and social life. Political Ideology in Parties, Policy, and Civil Society demonstrates that the reach and significance of political ideology is most effectively understood by employing a multidisciplinary approach. Contributors to this volume explore a broad territory: the influence of English country party ideology on late-eighteenth-century American political thought; multiculturalism, populism, and environmentalism in Canada; the ideological underpinnings of Canadian development assistance policy; contemporary efforts to shape working-class and farmer ideologies in western Canada; and the interweaving of academic theory and ideology in game theory. This wide-ranging and stimulating volume offers empirical interpretations that reveal key aspects of the conceptual structure, social meaning, adaptability, and power of ideologies as they are enacted in diverse settings, including those seldom seen as obviously political. It breaks new ground and demonstrates the strength of interdisciplinary approaches to the study of political ideology. Advanced students and faculty in political science, communications, history, sociology, and cultural studies will find this book a timely and intelligent support for their work.

An Introduction to Modern Social and Political Thought

This comprehensive overview of the Western tradition of political thought approaches concepts with the aim of helping readers develop their own political thinking and critical thinking skills. This text is uniquely organized around the theme of civil society - what is the nature of a civil society? Major thinkers discussed in the text are explored not only with the goal of understanding their views, but also with an interest in understanding the relationship of their ideas to the notion of a civil society. DeLue and Dale contend that a civil society is important for securing the way of life that most of us value and want to preserve, a way of life that allows people to live freely and place significance on their own lives. New to the Fourth Edition Connects traditional political theory to contemporary challenges to civil society including new coverage of US electoral politics, the Black Lives Matter movement, Citizens United, and Robert Putnam's view of the decline of social support systems.

Political thinking, political theory, and civil society (4th edition), edited by. S. M. DeLue and T. M. Dale, New York, Routledge, , pp., $ (hardback).

Civil Society, Second Edition

Political philosophy is the philosophical study of government , addressing questions about the nature, scope, and legitimacy of public agents and institutions and the relationships between them. Its topics include politics , liberty , justice , property , rights , law , and the enforcement of laws by authority : what they are, if they are needed, what makes a government legitimate , what rights and freedoms it should protect, what form it should take, what the law is, and what duties citizens owe to a legitimate government, if any, and when it may be legitimately overthrown, if ever. Political theory also engages questions of a broader scope, tackling the political nature of phenomena and categories such as identity , culture , sexuality , race , wealth , human-nonhuman relations , ecology , religion , and more. Political philosophy is a branch of philosophy , [2] but it has also been a major part of political science , within which a strong focus has historically been placed on both the history of political thought and contemporary political theory from normative political theory to various critical approaches.
