Developmental Approaches to the Self pp Cite as. Since Vygotsky never wrote about the self or its development, his contributions to such issues lies in the way he formulates the relationships between consciousness, language, cognition, and emotions.

We will show how his semiotic and functionalist psychology is the starting point for a unified and dialectical theory of subjectivity. This theory is about how language creates new functional connections between psychological processes and thereby changes consciousness. Therefore one cannot understand any particular aspect of development, be it play, motivation, or egocentric speech and inner speech, without seeing its place in his overall developmental theory.
