This chapter discusses the most important methods used for this purpose in modern medical practice. Understanding how these methods work has become of increasing importance in an environment that includes immunocompromised patients, transplantation, indwelling devices, and AIDS.
Let us make an in-depth study of the methods and basic principles of sterilisation and disinfection. Sterilisation can be effected by the following methods: I. Physical Methods and II. Chemical Methods. These two terms are used to describe the killing or removal of micro-organisms.
