The purpose of this Guidance Document for Disinfectants and Sterilization Methods is to assist lab personnel in their decisions involving the judicious selection and proper use of specific disinfectants and sterilization methods. Antisepsis : A process involving the destruction or inhibition of mico-organisms in living tissue thereby limiting or preventing the harmful effects of infection. Antiseptic: Typically an antiseptic is a chemical agent that is applied to living tissue to kill microbes. Note that not all disinfectants are antiseptics because an antiseptic additionally must not be so harsh that it damages living tissue.

Sterilization- physical and chemical methods

Sterilization refers to any process that removes, kills, or deactivates all forms of life in particular referring to microorganisms such as fungi , bacteria , spores , unicellular eukaryotic organisms such as Plasmodium , etc. Sterilization is distinct from disinfection , sanitization, and pasteurization , in that those methods reduce rather than eliminate all forms of life and biological agents present. After sterilization, an object is referred to as being sterile or aseptic. One of the first steps toward modernized sterilization was made by Nicolas Appert who discovered that thorough application of heat over a suitable period slowed the decay of foods and various liquids, preserving them for safe consumption for a longer time than was typical. Canning of foods is an extension of the same principle and has helped to reduce food borne illness "food poisoning".

Sterilization can be achieved by a combination of heat, chemicals, irradiation, high pressure and filtration like steam under pressure, dry heat, ultraviolet radiation, gas vapor sterilants, chlorine dioxide gas etc. Effective sterilization techniques are essential for working in a lab and negligence of this could lead to severe consequences, it could even cost a life. So what are the most commonly used methods of sterilization in the laboratory, and how do they work? Read on…. The extent of sterilization is affected by the temperature of the heat and duration of heating.

From the time of debates about the germ theory of disease, killing microbes before they reach patients has been a major strategy for preventing infection. In fact, Ignaz Semmelweis successfully applied disinfection principles decades before bacteria were first isolated. This chapter discusses the most important methods used for this purpose in modern medical practice. Understanding how these methods work has become of increasing importance in an environment that includes immunocompromised patients, transplantation, indwelling devices, and AIDS.

Let us make an in-depth study of the methods and basic principles of sterilisation and disinfection. Sterilisation can be effected by the following methods: I. Physical Methods and II. Chemical Methods. These two terms are used to describe the killing or removal of micro-organisms.

Sterilization and disinfection are the basic components of hospital infection control activities. Every day, a number of hospitals are performing various surgical procedures. Even more number of invasive procedures are being performed in different health care facilities. The medical device or the surgical instrument that comes in contact with the sterile tissue or the mucus membrane of the patient during the various processes is associated with increased risk of introduction of pathogens into the patient's body. Moreover, there is chance of transmission of infection from patient to patient; from patient or to health care personnel, and vice versa; or from the environment to the patient through the improper sterilized or disinfected devices. Hence, medical personnel, laboratory people and the health care providers should have better knowledge regarding these techniques to prevent the spread of these pathogens.

Last Updated on January 3, by Sagar Aryal. Microorganisms play an important role in causing infection and contamination. Therefore, Sterilization is an important technique in microbiology which helps to remove or destroy microorganisms from materials or surfaces.

This article is intended to provide a broad overview of common sterilization technologies and the basic elements of sterility assurance, followed by guidelines for selecting a sterilization process. A brief history of microbiology is provided to remind readers how recently it was discovered that sterility is a critical factor in medical procedures.

Disinfectants and Sterilization Methods
